Recently, a man riding his bicycle near Prospect Park in Brooklyn was hit by a car and left with life-threatening injuries. The crash happened on Grand Army Plaza, the oval plaza and road at the northern end of the park.
The New York Post does not have many details about this bicycle accident, but we do know that it happened around 6:30 pm, so darkness or glare from a setting sun were not factors. The impact smashed the car’s windshield, so it appears that the rider was forced up the hood and into the glass by the impact. You can imagine from the photographs in the Post how violent the collision must have been.
First responders rushed the cyclist to the hospital. He was in critical condition as of June 21, the date of the crash. His current condition is unknown.
Possible outcomes of bike accidents like this one
If the rider survives, he will likely have to deal with severe bodily trauma. He might be permanently disabled. If not, he probably will require extensive, grueling medical treatment to recover. We don’t know his age or if he has minor children. If he does, those kids could be without their father’s financial support for months, if not years.
Bicycle riders risk their safety every time they are on the street. No matter how alert and careful they are, there is always the chance that a driver will follow too close, be distracted by their phone or turn without looking. And when a car, truck or SUV collides with a bike, it is the bike rider who always gets the worst of it.
